Wyandotte, MI
Wyandotte, Michigan, is a Detroit River community about six miles before the river pours into Lake Erie. It’s a wonderful, self-contained city featuring our own water treatment plant, electrical plant, cable television and internet provider, recycling facility, and much more. Wyandotte is the home of the nation’s first Purple Heart memorial, recently re-created and rebuilt on Superior Blvd. at the foot of Biddle Avenue to create a beautiful plaza and statue in honor of America’s fighting forces.
Wyandotte is home to the Downriver Council for the Arts, located in the old Masonic Temple building, located at 81 Chestnut Street Visit them on line at www.downriverarts.org It’s also a Heritage City and features a serious Historical Society. Wyandotte has a LOT of history and tremendous work has been done to preserve our memories. We have a first-rate library (Bacon Memorial) in one of the historic landmark buildings and part of the historic campus. There are several parks throughout the city including two on the waterfront.
Wyandotte boasts a fantastic downtown district that serves as our region’s independent shopping area. There are 6 (SIX!) clothing stores for women, 1 (one) for fine men's clothing (hint-hint) as well as many other great independent shops offering gifts and novelty items and art. We have lots of places to eat and drink, with a wide variety of styles and specialties. From martinis to tequila or cigar bars, from pizzerias to fine dining, Wyandotte offers a ton of variety!
Once a month, the merchants in the downtown area host a series of open-house welcome wagon events called Third Fridays (not surprisingly, occurring on the 3rd Friday of every month). We offer sales, have a horse and buggy riding around along with a nifty trolley, hire entertainment, raise money for worthwhile charities and causes. We have wine crawls and beer blasts, and we try to feature Michigan products at both of those. If you’re not familiar with Wyandotte, a Third Friday is a great way to get to know this unique suburban Detroit city. Check the WBA website (see link below) for current info.
The Wyandotte Business Association (WBA) represents over 185 members of the business community.
